STEP to STL: what happens to your geometry

A STEP file holds exact surfaces; STL holds triangles. Converting means tessellating every face — approximating curves with flat facets. How fine those facets are decides both how smooth the part looks and how big the file gets.

Here you control that directly: a target edge size, plus (under Advanced) an angle tolerance and minimum / maximum edge lengths. Use a smaller edge size for parts with tight curvature or cosmetic surfaces, a larger one for blocky parts where file size matters more.

What is STEP?
STEP (.step / .stp, ISO 10303) is the neutral CAD exchange format. It stores exact B-rep geometry — planes, cylinders, NURBS surfaces, solids — and opens in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, FreeCAD, Inventor, CATIA, NX and practically every other CAD system.
What is STL?
STL stores a surface as plain triangles — no units, no colour, no curves. It is the default format for 3D printing and what most scanners, slicers and sculpting tools export.

Is STEP to STL really free?

Yes. Converting STEP to any mesh format is free and unlimited for normal use (there is a fair-use limit of 60 conversions per hour). No account or watermark.

How do I get a smoother STL?

Lower the target edge size, and under Advanced lower the angle deviation. Both produce more, smaller triangles on curved faces. The file grows accordingly.

STP or STEP — is there a difference?

No. .stp and .step are the same ISO 10303 format with different file extensions; both upload fine.

Can I go back from STL to STEP later?

A mesh loses the exact surfaces, so going back needs reconstruction rather than conversion. That's what our STL to STEP tool does: it rebuilds real CAD surfaces from a mesh.
